Luca was one of the first trans men I had ever met — though honestly, I did not even realize he was trans until months into our friendship, which still makes me laugh looking back now. That was part of Luca’s magic. He existed so fully and unapologetically as himself that labels somehow felt secondary to his presence.

Needless to say, I absolutely loved his fierce tenacity from the very beginning.

Before the farms, before the deserts, before the homesteading projects, natural building, and all the places he would eventually travel, there was simply Luca: curious, expressive, deeply compassionate, wildly intelligent, funny as hell, and completely unwilling to live life halfway.

Even then, he carried something rare about him.

Some people move through the world consuming attention. Luca moved through the world creating belonging.

From the very beginning, he possessed this extraordinary ability to make people feel welcomed exactly as they were. There was never pressure to perform around him. No hierarchy of coolness. No need to prove yourself. He had a way of making spaces softer, warmer, safer, and more alive simply by existing within them.

One of my favorite early memories of Luca was at Gun Rock Beach, a place my family spent summers at for years. One afternoon Luca was off in his own little world on the beach practicing martial arts while everyone else swam or lounged around. Completely focused. Completely immersed. Repeating movements over and over, refining technique with this almost meditative intensity.

My uncle — very much a well-meaning “normie” from a different generation — became fascinated watching him and kept commenting on how disciplined and committed Luca seemed to his craft. Later, after noticing Luca’s top surgery scars while we were all hanging out, my uncle innocently asked him about the “gnarly chest scars.”

Without missing a beat, Luca casually replied, “Oh, I cut my tits off for aesthetic purposes.”

The absolute confusion on my uncle’s face still cracks me up to this day.

Meanwhile the rest of us were absolutely losing it laughing while my uncle tried desperately to process what he had just heard and piece together gender identity concepts in real time. Luca had this incredible dry humor about him. He never seemed interested in overexplaining himself to make other people comfortable. He simply existed authentically and let the rest of the world catch up at its own pace.

Another memory I hold close is from when I was struggling my way through beauty school at Empire Beauty School. I was overwhelmed, stressed, and constantly worried about completing enough practical work and haircut credits to stay on track.

Luca would literally ride the Red Line on the T just to come let me practice haircuts on him for class credits.

Over and over again.

No complaints. No ego. Just showing up because that is who he was.

Looking back now, that small act says so much about him. Luca understood support in practical ways. He showed love through presence, participation, encouragement, and care. He helped people quietly and consistently, often without making a big production out of it.

Over the years, our lives drifted geographically in different directions, but the thread of love and friendship between us never broke. If anything, it deepened as we both grew more fully into ourselves.

Luca eventually built a life that reflected everything he valued most: food, land, mutual care, creativity, animals, ecological stewardship, collective liberation, and queer joy.

He was never someone interested in shallow living.

He wanted connection — to people, to land, to community, to ancestry, to craft, to meaning.

And he pursued that connection with his entire heart.

A Life Built by Hand

Luca lived many lives within one lifetime.

He was a chef, fermenter, educator, builder, traveler, martial artist, poet, musician, healer, farmer, and caretaker. We played poker using Goldfish crackers as chips, cooked elaborate meals together, danced through rooms like no one was watching, and sang constantly.

At one point we discovered a treasure chest filled with old whimsical clothing and flowing dresses, and naturally we spent the remainder of the trip embodying Stevie Nicks with complete sincerity and zero shame.

Scarves flowing. Dramatic dancing. Pure commitment to the bit.

That was Luca.

Fearlessly expressive. Completely free in spirit. ecosystems.

Communities.

Relationships.

Memories.

Skills.

Seeds.

Stories.

Laughter.

Music.

Recipes.

Love.

And perhaps most importantly, proof that another way of living was possible.

A slower way.

A kinder way.

A more connected way.

I met Luca when we were just young queer kids trying to survive and become ourselves.

I never could have imagined all the places he would travel, all the people he would touch, or how deeply his spirit would root itself into so many lives across this country.

But looking back now, it somehow makes perfect sense.

Because Luca never belonged to only one place.

He belonged to everyone fortunate enough to know him.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="206" height="206"
